The Claret Jug will be up for grabs this week at Muirfield, and it’ll be interesting to see if one of the top contenders is able to capture it come Sunday afternoon.

Winning a major tournament can do wonders for a golfer’s legacy, and having the opportunity to walk around with this for an entire year probably isn’t too bad either (h/t the official Twitter account for The Open Championship):

So, which of the top-ranked players in the world should you keep an eye on throughout this week and weekend in Scotland?

Here’s a prediction of where some of the biggest names in golf will finish in The Open Championship, with analysis on how they’ve done at the tournament in the past and what needs to happen in order for them to win.

Rory McIlroy:
Rory McIlroy has won two of the four major championships in his career, but he’s never had the chance to hoist the Claret Jug. Since finishing third at St. Andrews back in 2010, it’s been downhill ever since at The Open Championship. In 2011, he tied for 25th place. Last year, McIlroy finished in a tie for 60th.

While McIlroy hasn’t been cut from any of the PGA events he’s played in this year, he's missed three cuts in his last three tournaments on the European Tour, including the Irish Open just under three weeks ago. Since finishing in the top 10 at The Players Championship back in May, he’s yet to place in the top 40 at an official PGA Tour event. That includes the U.S. Open, where he was 14 over through four rounds.

In order to win his third major, Rory has to be better on par threes (93rd on Tour) and fives (71st). He’s the ninth-best on the tour at making birdie or better on par fours. He only makes birdie or better on par threes 12.88 percent of the time and 41.8 percent of the time on par fives. Making birdies on those holes are his key to victory this week.

Justin Rose:
Aside from getting cut at The Players, Justin Rose has had a near-perfect season. He won the U.S. Open a few weeks ago and has five top-10 finishes. He’s also finished in the top 25 of every event that he wasn’t cut at. He shot six under and finished in a tie for 13th place at the Travelers Championship, his most recent PGA Tour event.

You have to go back quite a few years to find the last time Rose played very well at The Open Championship. For those who don’t remember, Rose hit about a 50-yard shot from the rough on the last hole to finish tied for fourth in 1998 when he was 17 years old. He’s been cut from the championship in two of the last three years.

While Rose has been successful in 2013, he has to capitalize on the shorter holes. He has only made birdie or better on par threes 9.56 percent of the time, which is the 172nd best on the PGA Tour. He’s the best on par fives, though, as he makes birdie or better on 57.14 percent of the holes. It’s the short ones that kill him.

Graeme McDowell:
Graeme McDowell has been nonexistent at major tournaments this season. That’s surprising considering how well he played at the four tournaments in 2012. Last year, he finished in the top five twice and in the top 12 all four times. In 2013, he’s failed to play the weekend at the Masters and the U.S. Open.

In fact, McDowell hasn’t made the cut at any PGA Tour even since the RBC Heritage in late April, which he won in a playoff. Early in the season, it appeared that it would be a good year for the Northern Ireland native. He placed in the top 10 in four of the first six events he played in 2013. Since, it’s been a disaster for McDowell.

The 2010 U.S. Open champion placed tied for fifth last year at The Open Championship, a year after getting cut. His biggest problem this season has been hitting greens. He ranks 151st on the PGA Tour in GIR percentage at 62.5 percent. If you don’t hit the green, it’s tough to make birdies. Without those, it’s tough to win.

The news comes as a further blow to the tournament, which benefits the Tiger Woods foundation, with Woods pulling out last week due to an elbow injury.

In a statement issued via tournament organisers, 2010 winner Rose said: "I'm disappointed to withdraw from the AT&T National, but the last three weeks have been extremely demanding both mentally and physically.

"This tournament has been very good to me - especially in 2010 - and I would play if I felt I could. Tiger and his Foundation run a great tournament, and I wish I could be there."

Rose honoured a commitment to play in the Travelers Championship in the week after his first major victory, finishing joint 13th on Sunday.

Trying to figure out, just how many AT&Ts golf tournaments there are? It's not easy separating the AT&T sponsored pro golf tournaments these days.

There's the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, which is played in February. There's the AT&T Classic, formerly called the BellSouth Classic, and then there's "Tiger's Tournament," known formally as the AT&T National, which will be played the last weekend of June. The annual AT&T National will be held in Congressional Country Club, Bethesda, Maryland from June 24 - June 30th, 2013.

AT&T National will be very competitive and challenging this year at the 7,237-yard, par 70 layout, with three of the year's PGA TOUR winners already. Eight days before the start of British Open week and is regarded as a key opportunity for the star-studded field to prove their games are on track.

Bet on 120 PGA TOUR professionals as they compete for the AT&T National title and the prize purse of $6.5 million.

BETHESDA, Md. -- A day after playing in front of less than 75 fans due to horrible overnight storms in the Washington, D.C. area, the galleries following Tiger Woods in Sunday's final AT&T National grouping promise to be quite large.

Woods is set to tee off at 1:15 p.m. EDT with leader Brendon de Jonge and Bo Van Pelt off the first tee at Congressional CC.

Woods is coming off a bogey-free, 4-under 67 on Saturday that vaulted him into a share of second place with Van Pelt and Seung-Yul Noh, with all three one shot behind de Jonge.

Stay tuned all day long, as we take you shot-by-shot through Tiger's round, as well as keep you updated on the rest of the field.
GolfWRX is live from Congressional Country Club, site of this week’s PGA Tour event, the AT&T National.

Last year, Tiger Woods won the event, which is hosted by his charity the Tiger Woods Foundation.

Woods is unable to tee it up in the event this year due to injury, but the tournament features a strong field that includes Adam Scott, Jason Day, Hunter Mahan and many other top-ranked golfers.

Check out the inside-the-ropes photos we shot from around the course this week. Be sure to check back, as we’re updating this story with new photos every day.

Monday: Justin Leonard, Robert Streb, John Daly’s House of Forged shaft, Jason Bohn, Colt Knost, David Lingmerth, George McNeil, Joe Ogilvie, Cameron Tringale, Stuart Appleby, Will Claxton, Jonathan Byrd, Greg Chalmers, Seung Yul Noh, William McGirt, Martin Flores, Matt Jones, Matt Every, Luke List, Jeff Overton, Ben Kohles and more!

The U.S. Open is set to begin Thursday from Merion Golf Club in Ardmore and the PGA Tour is ready to dish out its second major championship of the season and Tiger Woods is hoping that he is in contention as the weekend rolls around, as it has been years since he has hoisted a major championship trophy.

Woods will get the 113th Open started the right way and with some major competition, as his first grouping as Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott, the two players ranked behind him in the world. Woods always steps up to the competition and after playing so well on the tour during this year, he will once again be the favorite, just as he was for the Masters at Augusta National in April where he dealt with a drop controversy. Many will say that winner likely will come from that group, as Scott is coming off his first major win at Augusta and McIlroy is looking for his third major in three years, but anything can happen at Merion.

The course was basically flooded over the weekend and many players have said that the greens will be soft for the duration. The course is a challenging one due to its length and layout and players who hit it big off the tees may end up having a long weekend depending on how the weather turns out. Woods has been playing very well all year and he has been killing par-five holes, but it's the par-four holes on this course that should get everyone's attention as the tournament begins. He won at the Players Championship a few weeks ago and that added to his victories at the Farmers Insurance Open, WGC Cadillac Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Woods had the chance to get asked about Sergio Garcia at the start of the Open, as they two had a bit of an incident at the Players before it descended into more. Garcia said that woods distracted him during a shot and after the two went back and forth in the media, Garcia made a racist joke about fried chicken that he apologized for publically, but the two have not yet been able to meet and talk it out, as Woods said there hasn't been time. The two were seen on the driving range and they shook hands and spoke briefly, but Woods said it was noting major.

Woods said the comments were hurtful but that he has moved on from them and is now concentrating on the Open. Woods has spent the year in a relationship with Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn and many have said that is part of the reason why he has been so relaxed on the course this year. Either way, Woods will have all the attention as usual when things pick up on Thursday and his grouping will be one that the cameras will follow.

Woods will have some attention on him as he tries to break his drought and the course will be a tough one for all the players, especially with the weather and Woods will be looking for his first US open since 2008, which was also his last major win. He won that in a Monday playoff to win his 14th and now he looks for his 15th just as Adam Scott tries to become the first Masters champ to win the Open, something that no one has done since Woods did it in 2002.
